Just when you thought that 1970's style singer/songwriters only existed in the 70's, here comes this Canadian to give melody-starved listeners some extremely sweet and tasty ear candy. You won't find any techno or Britney/Cristina type of sounds here.

From the moment I first heard this CD at a listening post at Borders Bookstore, I fell in love with it. I must have played it in my car non-stop for two weeks straight.

Ron's music is mostly guitar/bass/drums/keyboard rock, but with enough strings to satisfy those who love orchestras. One song in particular, "I Know It Well", always brings tears to my eyes because of its simple beauty. Paul McCartney is an admirer of Ron's music, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that some of the songs sound a little McCartney-esque.

I hope that my 'review' will prompt at least one person to give a listen to this CD. If I could write and play music better, this is the kind of music I'd love to be able to produce.

Thanks for letting me know! I'm glad you're enjoying it! Check out his website sometime. There's a real nice video for the song "Whatever It Takes" that you can view.

Ron Sexsmith is incredibly consistant as an artist--all of his albums range from pretty good to excellent. If you liked "Retriever," I'd recommend "Blue Boy" as a second purchase, or perhaps "Other Songs." Really, they're all good.

I picked up his album 'Cobblestone Runway' at a used CD store. I haven't heard it enough to rate it as highly as 'Retriever'. Is that as good, better, or worse than the two you mentioned, Benjamin?
